I realize this post goes againt the "Mission Statement" of this blog (..pointing out absurdities..) but I can't help but advertise when Congress finally shows signs of sensibility.

House Passes Bill to Slash Funds to U.N.

WASHINGTON - Culminating years of frustration with the performance and behavior of the
United Nations', the House voted Friday to slash U.S. contributions to the world body if it does not substantially change the way it operates...

"We have had enough waivers, enough resolutions, enough statements," said House International Relations Committee Chairman Henry Hyde, R-Ill., the author of the legislation. "It's time we had some teeth in reform."

The legislation would withhold half of U.S. dues to the U.N.'s general budget if the organization did not meet a list of demands for change. Failure to comply would also result in U.S. refusal to support expanded and new peacekeeping missions. The bill's prospects in the Senate are uncertain..." read it all here

Just Pop a Cap in Them

Dozens of incidents in which police officers have used electric stun guns to subdue unruly students have led school officials around the USA to restrict the use of the devices on campus. In Florida, North Carolina and other states, the use of Tasers to stop fights and other threatening behavior is being restricted. Maybe they should used a Billy Club?

What makes this story rate space on my blog is the failure of people to see that corporal punishment (i.e.- paddling) kept this kind of physical restraint from being necessary in the past.

Any 140+ Year Olds Out There?

The people of Chicago should be the laughing stock of the country, if not the world. Their elected official shave put in place an ordinance requiring companies to research their company's history and disclose whether they profited from slavery. Unless there is someone over 140 years old, no one alive today needs to know this. Does the City Leadership require Mitsubishi (maker of the WW2 Zeros) to apologize for bombing Pearl Harbor and dragging us into war? Do they demand apologies for all of the Jews killed in the Holocaust from Volkswagen (maker of several Nazi vehicles)? How about Wal-Mart, Target and other retailers who get merchandise from China? That will not happen because the groups affected by that PAST HISTORY do not have poverty pimps out there stirring up hatred...plus those affected groups have way too much pride to let something so stupid happen.

N.Y. Audit: Sex Offenders Getting Viagra By MICHAEL VIRTANEN, Associated Press Writer

Scores of convicted rapists and other high-risk sex offenders in New York have been getting Viagra paid by Medicaid for the last five years, the state's comptroller said Sunday.

Audits by Comptroller Alan Hevesi's office showed that between January 2000 and March 2005, 198 sex offenders in New York received Medicaid-reimbursed Viagra after their convictions. Those included crimes against children as young as 2 years old, he said.

Increased snowfall over a large area of Antarctica is thickening the ice sheet and slowing the rise in sea level caused by melting ice.

A satellite survey shows that between 1992 and 2003, the East Antarctic ice sheet gained about 45 billion tonnes of ice - enough to reduce the oceans' rise by 0.12 millimetres per year. The ice sheets that cover Antarctica's bedrock are several kilometres thick in places, and contain about 90% of the world's ice. But scientists fear that if they melt in substantial quantities, this will swell the oceans and cause devastation on islands and coastal lands.

Flip your television clicker over to C-SPAN's coverage of the House of Representatives and watch the speeches on the floor. View these for any length of time and you will notice a pattern. The chair will announce "The gentleman from so-and-so is recognized for five minutes." If he finishes before the time limit is up, the member will say, "I yield back the balance of my time." If he is not finished, the sharp rap of the speaker's gavel will be heard — even as the member continues speaking — and the voice from the dais will intone, "The time of the gentleman has expired." If the member holding forth doesn't sit down right quick — unless he asks for (and receives) unanimous consent to continue — he can be escorted from the floor.

Clearly, it is much easier to shut down a windbag in the House than it is in the Senate, where the filibuster still protects the right to effectively unlimited debate. But as the Senate moves closer to some sort of confrontation over filibusters of President Bush's judicial nominees, there's a question hanging in the air worth asking: Why is the filibuster allowed in the Senate but not in the House of Representatives?

The answer is that the filibuster did indeed once have a home in the House. That it doesn't anymore is a tribute to a 19th-century Republican hero: Speaker Thomas Brackett Reed of Maine. If he is recalled at all today, it is because of the memorable nickname his enemies fastened to him in the wake of Reed's successful abolition of the filibuster in the House: "Czar."

81-year-old neither terminally ill, comatose, nor in vegetative state

"In a situation recalling the recent death of Terri Schiavo in Florida, an 81-year-old widow, denied nourishment and fluids for nearly two weeks, is clinging to life in a hospice in LaGrange, Ga., while her immediate family fights desperately to save her life before she dies of starvation and dehydration.

Mae Magouirk was neither terminally ill, comatose nor in a "vegetative state," when Hospice-LaGrange accepted her as a patient about two weeks ago upon the request of her granddaughter, Beth Gaddy, 36, an elementary school teacher.
Also upon Gaddy's request and without prior legal authority, since March 28 Hospice-LaGrange has denied Magouirk normal nourishment or fluids via a feeding tube through her nose or fluids via an IV. She has been kept sedated with morphine and ativan, a powerful tranquillizer.

The dehydration is being done in defiance of Magouirk's specific wishes, which she set down in a "living will," and without agreement of her closest living next-of-kin, two siblings and a nephew: A. Byron McLeod, 64, of Anniston, Ga.; Ruth Mullinax, 74, of Birmingham, Ala.; and Ruth Mullinax's son, Ken Mullinax.

In her living will, Magouirk stated that fluids and nourishment were to be withheld only if she were either comatose or "vegetative," and she is neither. Nor is she terminally ill, which is generally a requirement for admission to a hospice." (How did Terri Schiavo get into one??)

WHY do we hold judges and justices in such high esteem???? Aren't they just lawyers elevated to a higher position? The very same lawyers we joke about (Q- What do you call a busload of lawyers rolling down a hill? A- Who cares?). We call them "scheisters" one day, and the next "Your Honor" just because of a a black robe? They are no better, no different than before and they prove it daily. Look at the Schiavo case, then look at the one referenced here. They are nothing but fools... but we are the bigger fool for letting them get away with it.

Separating a person from their faith is impossible, but judges are trying to accomplish that daily. See this story to see what I mean.

Why would we continue to support an organization which was actively in the business of funding, (through its corrupt programs) as well as covering for those same corrupt regimes which are commiting genocide and/or terrorist activities? Evidently, I am not the only one tired of it.

I thank God that we have a President smart enough to see the folly in the Kyoto Treaty as well as the detriment it would cause the United States as compared to other countries. Worried about manufacturing jobs being outsourced? If not for President Bush, all manufacturing jobs would leave the U.S. for China, Korea, Mexico and others who are exempt from Kyoto. Corporations can barely afford the cumbersome environmental measures already in place by our own governmental agencies, much less the punitive measures the jealous signitaries of Kyoto wrote into its pages.
